Our Vlog is up!

Image
This is our vlog! The basic gist is that we recreated what its like to do a uni group assignment by stereotyping. With one person who is bossy, another who is always late and making excuses, one who is constantly crying, and one that everyone hates. This isn't to be taken seriously, as it is entertaining and relatable in particular to Uni students. We related it to our blog through cinematic techniques such as talking heads and different shots, as well as the reference to Friends! We put this together by filming at Macquarie Uni campus, by the lake and outside the classrooms. Each group member featured in the film and contributed ideas and suggestions throughout the assessment. This collaboration provided us with the end product, as seen below! Isobel used iMovie to piece the whole film together, and Maddie uploaded it onto YouTube. Check it out below! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jX_BbJPq2Rg -Maddie and the rest of the team 31/10/2017

The Undateables: Exploiting Disability?

Image
The Undateables is a TV series run by Channel 4 in the UK and surrounds the difficulties with finding love for people with disabilities and other potential life-threatening conditions. It is a light-hearted show meant to entertain yet allows the viewer to sympathise in some cases with the individuals shown within each episode as they battle the complications that dating brings to the table. Disabilities such as Tourettes Syndrome, Autism and Asperges are showcased within different episodes, and these disabilities are presented in a multitude of different ways which communicates the concept that everyone is unique and different, even if they are labelled to act or perform in a certain stereotypical way. Some have argued that the series creates entertainment and comedic value from people's disabilities as they may not conform to what is seen as 'normal' by other peoples standards. According to the Daily Mail's post (which is linked below), doctors have foun

Wonder Woman review

Image
A movie that kicks ass just as much as the main character.   The movie Wonder Woman hit cinemas earlier this year on June 2nd and took the world by storm. It stars the lovely Gal Gadot who can also be known as Giselle in some films in the Fast and Furious franchise. This movie received many positive ratings due to its ability to break down barriers against sexism including doubts some people had with the female director. It is said to be known as one of the best superhero movies of the year as well as being called one of the best films in the DC Extended Universe. It includes a great mixture of action and girl power which I think makes it fair to say that this movie is influential to its female audience. So, what makes this movie so powerful?  This movie in unlike your average superhero film. To start off the main character is a woman and the background basis of the story conveys a deeper representation of women and girl power than most films have before. As wel

Review: The Parent Trap

Image
The Parent Trap! The parent trap is one of the best movies released in the 90’s, and just about every girl has seen it. Featuring a young Lindsey Lohan, the film follows two identical twin sisters, who were both raised by one of their parents after they split when the girls were babies. After a chance meeting at summer camp, the girls plot a daring plan to bring their parents back together – switch places! At the end of summer camp, Halley takes Annie’s place and goes to London to meet her mother (Natasha Richardson), and Annie flies to California to meet her father (Dennis Quaid). After perfectly faking being the fake child, the twins realise that Nick (the father) is getting married, and hasten to bring their parents to San Francisco to finally reunite, although things don’t go as planned when they find out Nick’s pretentious fiancée (played by Elaine Hendrix) is only marrying Nick for his money. With the whole family converged at a hotel in San Fran, the twins plan

Review: How I Met Your Mother

Image
How I met your mother is an American comedy television show that is guaranteed to make you lose track of the day. The 20 minute episodes and the hilarity of the storyline make it a show that can be eagerly binge-watched, or alternatively, something you can put on to pass the time. The show follows Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), a hopeful young architect trying to succeed in his career and his love life in the beloved city of New York. The show is told with a voiceover narrator, as Ted recounts the story to his kids of “How I met your mother”. It begins after Teds best friend Marshall (Jason Segel) proposes to his girlfriend Lily (Alyson Hannigan), and Ted makes it his quest to find “the one” and is convinced she is somewhere in New York. Accompanied by his friend Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) who has endlessly hilarious jokes, a fetish for suits, and a playbook that is full of the best lies to pick up women, Ted embarks on his journey to find love. Though it sounds sexist, its possibly

13 Reasons Why: Helpful or Harmful

Image
A show that shone a light on topics that were unspoken of. Earlier this year, the world was introduced to a new show called 13 Reasons Why. Everybody was intrigued with this program as it had a different sense to other programs on tv. It spoke about, depicted situations and addressed topics such as suicide, rape, self harm and mental health issues. The show is about a teenage girl who commits suicide and leaves behind 13 tapes that detail why she decided to end her life. Each tape was addressed to a particular person, having recordings explaining how they all contributed to her suicide in some way. Although the show has a dark background, it was still loved by many as it dared to discuss topics that other shows and people in real life shy away from. Although it is somewhat good that these topics were depicted and discussed, there is the underlying question whether the show was more helpful or harmful especially to its young audience. It was shown that the average

Please Like Me: Josh Thomas

Image
If you haven't seen Josh Thomas's TV series, Please Like Me , you're missing out. An original drama but with added comedic value; the show illustrates realistic issues that many young people face on a daily basis, such as deep, personal family issues and coming out as gay. Featured on the ABC and now available to watch on Netflix, Thomas' series is aimed towards teenagers and young adults in particular due to the nature of the subjects that are featured within the series. In the very first episode, the viewer is confronted with Thomas' mother trying to commit suicide as she struggles with the idea that her ex-husband has left her. Thomas' charismatic disposition gives a light-hearted feel to the show as he continuously deals with complications whether it comes to his roommate, his family life or his love life as he experiments with his sexuality when his girlfriend breaks up with him because she thinks that he's gay. A tale as old as time: Beauty and the Beast

Image
Known best for her role as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter, Emma Watson stars as Belle in Disney's new "Beauty and the Beast", a remake of their 1991 animated version. Alongside her costars Dan Stevens (Beast), Luke Evans (Gaston) and Josh Gad (La fool), the tale is revolutionised as one of the more feminist Disney movies of the 21st century.  Smashing box office records, Beauty and the Beast featured the same musical numbers as the old, appealing to older viewers as well as younger ones. The distinct and beautiful voices of all characters in the musical numbers made for an entertaining and emotional journey, despite knowing all the events that would occur. Emma Watson playing the talented female heroine ‘Belle’ acts as a role model for young girls all over the globe, as they watch her turn down a man who is not right for her, despite society telling her otherwise. We see her go to endless lengths for her family, and develop a strong emotional connection with

Enchanting and Endlessly Creative: Spirited Away

Image
Perhaps one of the best and well-known Japanese animated movies, Hiyao Miyazaki's Spirited Away , incorporates elements of love, kindness, and generosity in conjunction with the complexity of animation and how Miyazaki's imagination and endless creativity produces a piece of work that is magical and enchanting for the viewer. Spirited Away was released in 2002 to audiences in Japan, and became so popular that it was then released to the rest of the world in which Miyazaki won several awards because of its captivating storyline and graphics. It appeals to other cultures and audiences because of the installation of Western influence; texts such as Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Homer's Odyssey to embellish a narrative that is alluring and exciting for different audiences and cultures to experience. The movie opens with the young protagonist Chihiro in the car with her parents leaving their hometown to live in the provinces; it sets up Chihiro as a spoi

Film Review: Moana

Image
J ust like how anything is a better love story than Twilight, Moana is better than Frozen.   Disney’s animated film, Moana, directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, follows the physical and emotional voyage of Moana ( Auli'i Cravalho ) , a young girl, unsure of who she is but determined to find Maui (Dwayne Johnson), shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero of men and women, in order to restore the heart of Tifinti and restore her island.   The film was an emotional ride from start to end. I was on the verge of tears so many times and well I had to “let it go” around 20 mins in. Seeing the characters on the verge of tears made me also be on the verge of tears.   Characters Really, only two main characters (Maui and Moana). A lot of characters were not necessary, Pau (the pig), the coconut pirates, crab. Hay Hay and the tattoo guy weren’t exactly necessary either but added to the humor element. It’s just many of these unnecessary characters have very limited scr

The History and Development of Film and How It Differs From Today

Image
Ever wanted to know how film came to be? Its roots are buried deep within history, even before the invention of the camera and photography!  The history and development of film came from the Renaissance (a time period in Europe where science and art thrived) as people experimented with perspective within artworks, utilising light and darkness to create this dimension within their works. There was also a sparked interest in how time and space worked together and by themselves because of this shift in perspective: Time-keeping became a part of the Medieval society (due to the invention of the clock) and became a part of the social fabric as it gave structure to society, and space became objectively defined through cartography (the practise of drawing maps) as exploration of 'new worlds' became an important part of civilisation.  After the invention of the Camera Obscura (dating back to Medieval times), and the Daguerrotype Camera invented in 1837 by Louis Daguerre and

Is Australian TV Guilty of Whitewashing?

Image
It's time to wake up Australia. As we come to a day and age where large countries such as Australia are becoming more multicultural, you have to ask yourself whether Australian tv is behind on the times. Of course these days they are more open about showing contestants on reality shows of a more diverse background, but still Australian made dramas such as Home and Away and Neighbours have yet to catch up with the rest of the world and the current Australia. Home and Away and Neighbours have been Australian soap opera favourites bringing the sense of drama into households since the early 80's. As Australia is transforming and becoming more diverse and multicultural, its weird to see that two Australian classics have yet to catch up in the sense of multiculturalism. Most if not all actors and actresses on the show are potentially  originally light skinned (without those tans from being a show set on the beach) and come from an Austra

Original Netflix Series: Riverdale

Image
The long awaited return of Riverdale has just hit our computer screens (available to watch on Netflix, obviously.)  If you haven't seen season 1, you're definitely missing out. The show surrounds the mysterious death of Jason Blossom and the small town of Riverdale's reaction to this occurrence. It focuses on a cast of senior high schoolers and how they try to uncover this mystery that has shaken Riverdale to its core.   The series has 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.8 on IMDb and 8.2 on TV.com, showing its popularity within its realm. The Netflix original describes itself as emotional and offbeat, and that is exactly what it is. The cast members include Cole Sprouse, who is largely known for playing the role of Cody Martin in the Suite Life of Zack and Cody. His loveable nature (although he is portrayed as dark and mysterious within the TV show) as the outcast within Riverdale as the character of Jughead Jones contrasted to the character of Cheryl Blossom (played by actr

5 Animated Films You Should Probably Skip

Image
Bolt To be fair, I haven’t watched it from start to end. It just never grabbed me and I think it’s a waste of time. Perhaps if you like talking animated animals and Miley Cyrus, this film would be worthwhile but other than that, meh? Also, it kind  of  seemed similar to Toy Story  in the “gotta return to my owner” just   way less interesting…  Click here for the trailer! 9 I honestly don’t know what I expected the film would be about when the main characters look like voodoo dolls. 9 was way more  scarring than Caroline . I’m so traumatized I don’t even know what it was about other than the last man alive in some robotic post-apocalyptic world splits his soul into “9” dolls  a nd they somehow save the world...maybe?? I don’t think there was a happy ending… Click here for the trailer!   Rango Don’t really like Johnny Depp and well this was just boring and dry (pun intended - film was about looking for water in a drought town)? The plot was messy and it w
